Northbank Digital Account review: the fee schedule is the whole story
Genuinely free day-to-day banking, undermined by an FX markup Northbank does not show you until after the transfer.

Full disclosure policyNorthbank does the boring parts well: sign-up took eleven minutes, the card arrived in four days, and I was never charged a maintenance fee. The problem is foreign exchange. The advertised '0% commission' is true and irrelevant — the margin is inside the rate, and across nine test transfers it averaged 1.9% against the mid-market rate on the same timestamp.
What works
- Account opened and verified in 11 minutes, fully in-app
- No monthly fee, no minimum balance, no inactivity fee — confirmed across 67 days
- Disputed transaction was provisionally credited in 26 hours
- Full CSV and OFX export, no paywall on statement history
What does not
- FX margin averaged 1.9% and is never shown as a number before you confirm
- '0% commission' wording is technically true but functionally misleading
- Plus tier's headline benefit is capped at $400/month, disclosed only in the PDF terms
- Phone support is Plus-tier only; free-tier users get chat with a 6-hour median first response
Buy it if
- Domestic day-to-day banking where FX never comes up
- People who want a genuinely fee-free account and will read the terms
Skip it if
- Anyone sending money abroad more than occasionally
- People who need same-day phone support without paying for Plus
What I actually did
I opened a Northbank account on 2 September 2025 with my own money, funded it with $2,400, and used it as my primary account for 67 days. Over that period I ran 68 transactions: 41 card payments, 12 domestic transfers, 9 international transfers, 4 ATM withdrawals and 2 deliberate disputes. Every fee below was reconciled against my own statement export, not against Northbank's marketing pages.

The one thing to check before you sign up
Onboarding and KYC
Eleven minutes from download to a funded account, including document capture and liveness check. That is the fastest of the six digital accounts I have opened since 2024. Two of my nine test documents were rejected on first upload with a specific reason ('glare on the lower third'), which is better behaviour than the generic 'try again' most apps give.
How they handle it when something goes wrong
I raised two disputes. A $38 duplicate merchant charge was provisionally credited in 26 hours and resolved permanently in nine days. A contested subscription renewal was declined after eleven days, with a written explanation citing the merchant's cancellation policy — the decision was arguably correct, and the explanation was specific enough to act on. Neither is remarkable; both are better than the category median.
Getting out
- Closure request accepted in-app, no retention call required
- Balance returned to the linked external account in 2 business days
- Statement history remained downloadable for 90 days after closure
- No closure fee
Verdict
Situational. If your money stays in one currency, Northbank is a straightforwardly good free account and I would use it myself. If you send money abroad, the undisclosed rate margin makes it an expensive account wearing a free account's clothes. The score reflects both halves; it is not an average of a good product and a bad one, it is one product whose value depends entirely on which half you live in.

Changelog
Every change to this review since first publication, including the ones that lowered the score. Corrections are logged here, never made silently.
Re-checked FX margin across 5 new transfers: 1.9% → 1.7%. Score unchanged (still undisclosed pre-confirmation). Plus tier price rose $5 → $7.
Northbank added an in-app fee summary screen. Verified it still omits the FX margin. Added the 'one thing to check' callout.
